Description¶
Students "were provided with an empty sheet of Roundhouse Diagram, the Roundhouse Diagram Worksheet and the Roundhouse Diagram Checklist". The empty sheet has 7 sections (adjustable to 5–9); the 6-item worksheet guides planning from stating the main idea through drawing symbolic figures; the 10-item Likert-type checklist supports self-evaluation of each step; and a researcher-prepared computer animation demonstrated how to form diagrams.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The worksheet's 6 items are completed before forming the diagram, and the checklist's 10 items are filled in for self-evaluation
- An animation prepared by the researchers is used to show students how to form Roundhouse Diagrams
Constraints¶
- The article notes that students who fail to form the Roundhouse Diagram are likely to have negative attitudes towards the course, so preliminary work on simple subjects is needed
Target Learners¶
- high school 9th grade physics students
Learning Goals¶
- planning and organizing knowledge about Force and Motion concepts
- self-evaluation of diagram quality
Claims¶
- Roundhouse Diagram Visual Tool [+M]
- Computer-assisted Roundhouse Diagrams produced higher posttest scores than the Context-Based Learning curriculum alone on a 9th-grade Force and Motion multiple-choice achievement test [+M]
- The Roundhouse Diagram group also scored higher on the short-answer concept test posttest than the control group [+M]
- Within-group gains on the multiple-choice achievement test were significant only for the Roundhouse Diagram group, not the control group [+M]
- Experimental group students held positive views about Roundhouse Diagrams, though about a quarter reported difficulty writing in their own words and being creative [+M]
