Same-year-level classmate peer coaching as an advantage over hierarchical senior-to-junior mentoring

Description

The article advances a model in which Buddies and Buddy Leaders are identified within the same year group, so that peer networks "can progress throughout the entire degree" rather than being lost when senior mentors graduate, as happens in hierarchical models. The authors argue this enables students to develop networks, friendships, and close rapport with peers, stimulating a relationship based on equality, and that improved pass rates may persist beyond first year, further strengthening later retention.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • At-risk students and high achievers must be identified within the same year group
  • The scheme must extend support to both on-campus and off-campus cohorts

Constraints

  • The persistence of benefits beyond first year is a suggestion by the authors, not a measured outcome in this study

Target Learners

  • first-year university students in courses with high failure and attrition rates

Learning Goals

  • academic success of at-risk students
  • retention and persistence through the degree program
