Sanger STaR integrated two-semester curriculum: eleven courses consolidated into two yearlong integrated courses, saving residents roughly $4,000¶

Description¶
Fresno State faculty and Sanger Unified leadership redesigned the STaR residency curriculum from three semesters with eleven separate courses into two yearlong integrated courses, one spanning pedagogy content and one covering curriculum and subject-matter instruction. Faculty teams collaborated for over a year, using classroom-based inquiry cycles around "real-time puzzles of practice" as a common structure. "For the 25 STaR residents, the two-semester model was beneficial in more ways than saving an entire semester’s worth of time and roughly $4,000 in tuition," including a free summer to earn money and no-cost course materials.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Sustained faculty collaboration across expertise areas (literacy, special education, mathematics, science, culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogy) and alignment with district professional development initiatives
Constraints¶
- The redesign responded to Sanger's specific district initiatives, such as earlier introduction of inclusion and differentiation strategies; the report presents it as one local design, not a general model
Target Learners¶
- Multiple-subject teacher residency candidates, including those seeking bilingual certification
Learning Goals¶
- Deeper, more coherent learning through integrated coursework
- Modeling integrated lesson planning and teaching for residents' own practice
Claims¶
Related Designs¶
- Fresno TK–3 Teacher Residency Program
- Phase-in schedule pacing resident responsibility and Danielson Clusters across the residency year
- Coursework aligned to four Program Learning Outcomes integrated across all courses
