Description

SLC is a learning approach that "use science literature including reflection journals, class notes, the inquiry data, and other artifacts of learning that reflect the stages of a scientific investigation", represented through discussion between group roles. It consists of three interconnected components — organizing the science record, role on literacy cycles, and student-made artifacts — and proceeds through seven stages: questions, prediction, planning, observation, conclusions, new questions or ideas, and conclusion journal. The article applies it in grade-11 physics on Direct Current Electricity.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Group roles (such as great idea developer and discussion leader) must be assigned so students document predictions and lead discussion
  • Learning instruments including syllabus, lesson plan, and student worksheet aligned to national competency standards

Constraints

  • The article notes responsibilities of each role should be adjusted to the ability development of each student, since not all students have the same ability

Target Learners

  • secondary vocational school students, grade 11

Learning Goals

  • conceptual understanding of physics (Direct Current Electricity)
  • scientific literacy
  • independent learning skills
