Description¶
The article defines a "scientist's image" as a three-component construct used to structure biographic material for physics teaching. As printed, "Biographical data, scientific achievements and character traits are the components of “scientist's image”" (Figure 1). Scientific achievements are further broken into reasons prompting the study, the method of solving the problem, and difficulties of scientific research. The framework guides teachers in selecting and presenting biography content, illustrated by a full example of Maria Skłodowska-Curie.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers must choose from the biography the information most relevant for today's youth, with facts of life confirming personal qualities of the scientist
Constraints¶
- Not every scientist can be covered in the physics course; edification of opinions and life facts is the main criterion for selection
Target Learners¶
- secondary school learners of physics, ages 13-15 in the reported experiment
Learning Goals¶
- motivation for learning physics
- development of morality, humanity and internationalism
- understanding the evolution of science
