Scrum methodology as an educational scaffold: a project-management framework with ceremonies, roles and artefacts that structures planning, monitoring and reflection in complex context-based learning environments¶

Description¶
Scrum methodology is "a project management framework" from business and industry, restyled for education. It rests on three pillars: "transparency, inspection and adaptation", enacted through ceremonies (stand-up, sprint review, retrospective), roles (product owner, scrum master) and artefacts (product backlog, scrum board with burndown chart, intermediate products). The article describes how its features scaffold three challenges of student-centred learning: sense making, process management and reflection, and it structures a thirteen-step implementation in a context-based chemistry module (Table 1).
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers need professional development to become familiar with the ceremonies, roles and artefacts; experimental teachers attended five sessions of 4 hours explaining, practising, and sharing experiences with Scrum.
Constraints¶
- The article notes implementation is challenging for teachers: some reported a straightforward implementation whereas others experienced it as challenging, including organizational issues and some resistance against Scrum methodology.
Target Learners¶
- secondary school chemistry students (grade 11)
Learning Goals¶
- understanding of Green Chemistry concepts
- self-regulation of learning
- collaboration
- attitude towards chemistry
Claims¶
- Scrum Methodology Improves Context Based Chemistry Achievement [+M]
Related Designs¶
Examples¶
- Run short stand-up meetings at the start of every lesson around the team's scrum board: the five-minute stand-up around the Scrum board at the start of every lesson
