Description

A laboratory analogue of a classroom used to measure learning, attention, and arousal objectively. Participants were "seated behind a table" viewing "30-minute educational films presented on a 19-inch television ~6 feet away", then completed 12-item multiple-choice quizzes; a subset was video-recorded and EEG-monitored. Inattentive behavior was coded by a condition-blind rater in 30-second epochs as look-aways of ≥3 consecutive seconds.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Educational films of developmentally-appropriate content (The Western Tradition series)
  • Condition-blind behavioral raters and, for arousal, EEG equipment

Constraints

  • The authors state the technique "has not been previously validated and warrants psychometric attention"

Target Learners

  • adolescents aged 13.9–16.9 years

Learning Goals

  • learning from educational film content
  • classroom attention regulation
