Description¶
From the synthesis of qualitative findings, methods course resources, and teacher education literature, the researchers derived "six principles of activity development" guiding the intervention activities: addressing content alongside pedagogy, targeting weak 2-D geometry topics such as quadrilaterals, discussing content before pedagogical practices, sequencing from easier to more advanced topics, using visual aids, and combining small group and individual work. The activities also progressed through van Hiele levels from level 0-1 sorting to level 2 true-false tasks.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities must address content in addition to pedagogical practices in the methods course
- Instruction must flow from easier topics to more advanced topics due to varied participant backgrounds
Constraints¶
- Developed for preservice elementary teachers with limited mathematics experience in a single methods course setting
Target Learners¶
- elementary school preservice teachers in a mathematics methods course
Learning Goals¶
- geometry content knowledge for teaching, especially quadrilaterals and shape classification
