Description¶
The study organized Microsoft Mathematics activities during lectures based on three main purposes of using a tool in teaching and learning (Wilson, 2008), presented in Table 1 as six uses: problem solving, calculation, visualization, graphing, exploratory, and confirmatory. For example, "Students utilized Microsoft Mathematics to facilitate the better visualization of a function, the concept that is taught or problem situation", with stated pedagogical benefits such as direct feedback linking parameters to graphical representation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities must be planned around stated purposes of tool use (drill and practice, visualization, exploration, confirmation)
Constraints¶
- Described and applied in the context of first-year university Calculus instruction
Target Learners¶
- first-year university students
Learning Goals¶
- solving Calculus problems
- visualizing functions and their parameters
- understanding integration concepts
