Description¶
The article organizes its lecture activities around three main purposes of using a tool in teaching and learning, adapted from Wilson (2008): promoting drill and practice (problem solving and calculation), variation of parameters (visualization and graphing), and conceptual understanding (exploratory and confirmatory use). Within these, students tried graphical, numerical, or algebraic approaches, changed parameters of Calculus functions and observed graphical changes, and validated their answers in problem solving tasks. The article states a pedagogical benefit that "Direct feedback is helpful to make the relation between the parameters in Calculus functions".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities must be organized around stated purposes of tool use, as the study planned activities based on three main purposes of using a tool in teaching and learning process
Constraints¶
- The framework was applied in a single first-year Calculus lecture setting at one university
Target Learners¶
- first-year university students in a Faculty of Information Technology
Learning Goals¶
- understanding Calculus concepts including limits, derivatives, and integration
- problem solving and connecting multiple mathematical representations
