Description¶
The structured inquiry model is a constructivist-based instructional model that "promotes the involvement of learners actively and creatively in the search for, examine, formulate concepts and principles of geometry". Learning is student-centered: students formulate hypotheses, perform experiments related to the geometry material, and draw conclusions to answer the hypotheses under teacher guidance. The article applies it to abstract three-dimensional geometry content for high-school students whose concrete-operational stage makes abstract concepts hard to grasp.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers guide students to rediscover concepts (guided reinvention) rather than transfer knowledge intact
- Student attitudes such as curiosity, flexibility, critical reflection and honesty support the process
Constraints¶
- Success is judged by how actively students search and find, not only by mastery of the material, per Sanjaya (2009) as cited
Target Learners¶
- high school grade 10 mathematics students
Learning Goals¶
- understanding of geometry concepts
- intellectual thinking skills and problem solving
Claims¶
- Structured Inquiry Higher Geometry Concept Understanding [+M]
- Interaction Learning Model Attitudes Geometry Understanding [+M]
