Description

The article's intervention operationalizes a lesson model in which "Each instructional lesson consisted of three components: 1) identifying key words and main ideas through text-based discourse, 2) synthesizing information within a single text for summarization and making inferences, and 3) integrating information across multiple texts". Interventionists model components through think-alouds, provide guided practice and corrective feedback, and gradually release responsibility as students show proficiency. The model targets both lower-level and higher-level language processes hypothesized to restrict struggling readers' synthesis of central ideas.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Interventionists use explicit instructional routines, quality feedback, and gradual release of responsibility, supported by semi-scripted lessons and weekly research-team support

Constraints

  • The article reports the feedback loop for main idea statements was challenging for undergraduate interventionists and required ongoing weekly professional development and script modifications

Target Learners

  • middle grade students (grades 6-8) reading below Basic or Basic on a state reading assessment

Learning Goals

  • identifying key words and main ideas in informational science texts
  • summarizing and making inferences
  • integrating information across multiple texts
  • vocabulary knowledge
