Design · All designs
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article describes a research-based instructional framework for organizing one-on-one tutoring sessions, comprising "(a) a 20-minute reading or re-reading of an easy or familiar text, (b) a 20-minute shared or interactive reading of a self-selected text, and (c) a 20-minute interactive writing segment targeting specific writing skills and strategies". Together the three components take approximately 50-55 minutes. The framework was designed to be flexible enough for tutors to adapt lessons while enabling close supervision and monitoring of implementation fidelity.
Design Implications¶
Context¶

- Tutors must be trained to implement the framework; fidelity of lesson implementation was monitored via protocols and lesson observations, with tutors implementing lessons as intended or with slight adaptations about 85% of the time
Constraints¶
- The framework was designed for one-on-one tutoring of at-risk first grade readers in a supplemental Tier 3 before-school program
Target Learners¶
- At-risk first grade readers in the lowest performing quartile
Learning Goals¶
- Early literacy skills including reading fluency, comprehension, and writing strategies
