Description

From a literature review on LGC, self-determined learning, and second-language strategies, the authors derived three design principles: learners are "creators capable of generating their own contexts and studying autonomously based on such contexts, through personalized learning assistance and continuous interactions with resources"; the system provides personalized support for determining learning content, plans, and strategies; and an open platform of learning resources with a content curation tool encourages interaction with resources and context expansion.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Functionalities include mobile and web-based anytime/anywhere learning, learner-generated content, OERs and online media resources, multisensory strategy choice, multimedia and natural language processing technologies, and an intelligent agent providing guidance without human instructors

Constraints

  • Principles were derived for English language education in South Korea with secondary students as the priority population

Target Learners

  • Korean secondary-school students

Learning Goals

  • autonomous English learning
  • learner-generated content creation
  • learning strategy selection
