Description¶
The article proposes that effective training depends on three major elements: exposure to realistic training scenarios and stimuli, fine control over training stimuli and scenarios (including adjusting difficulty to the trainee's current competence and repeating identical stimuli), and fine performance feedback that is fine-grained, unambiguous, and timely. The authors note a compromise between realism and control in real classrooms, where "the unpredictability of a real classroom greatly diminishes any control over the exact nature and difficulty of training stimuli". They designed 3B to combine all three elements in an immersive VR simulation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Control of stimuli and provision of feedback would ideally occur in a closed real-time loop between trainer and trainee
Constraints¶
- In real classrooms, feedback is largely restricted to deferred reviews decoupled from the actual situational context
Target Learners¶
- Trainee teachers learning classroom management
Learning Goals¶
- Adjusting behavior to achieve better results through realistic practice with controlled stimuli and timely feedback
Claims¶
- A first evaluation of 3B confirms its conformance to critical usability requirements including safety and comfort, believability, simplicity, acceptability, extensibility, affordability, and mobility [+W] — a usability evaluation of the 3B system, not of training outcomes
Patterns Used¶
- Practice with Simulated People: a virtual classroom gives realistic stimuli while keeping fine control over difficulty and repetition, with immediate fine-grained feedback
- Deliberate Practice: difficulty matched to the trainee's current competence, repeated identical stimuli and unambiguous, timely feedback
