Description

A three-phased pedagogical design, refined from a previous four-phased design, that maps sixteen principle-based activities onto Knowledge Building principles (epistemic agency, community knowledge, collective responsibility, improvable ideas, embedded concurrent and transformative assessment). Phase 1 creates a collaborative and reflective culture so students "develop collaboration, inquiry, and reflection skills for productive Knowledge Building inquiry"; Phase 2 engages students in problem-centered collaborative inquiry on Knowledge Forum; Phase 3 deepens inquiry and community knowledge through student-directed portfolio assessment and field trips.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A teacher experienced with Knowledge Building pedagogy to facilitate the classes
  • Knowledge Forum with integrated assessment tools such as Social Network Analysis and the Note Contribution applet

Constraints

  • Portfolio activities were not implemented in every class: group portfolio assessment only in Class C, individual portfolio assessments not in Class D, and one activity (designing questions) omitted for Class D, per Table 2

Target Learners

  • Academically low-achieving secondary school students (Grades 9 and 11)

Learning Goals

  • Inquiry, collaboration, reflection, and metacognitive skills; critical and creative thinking in Visual Arts
