Description¶
The VAS framework structures each course Activity as a five-step sequence: work on a mathematical activity, review what research says, research-informed reflection on the activity, engagement with modelled mentor–mentee interactions, and reflection connecting to one's own mentoring practice. The authors adapted Wilkerson et al.'s (2018) vignette approach, writing that "The VAS framework structured each Activity within the themed weeks, guiding participants through a five-step process". It is put forward as a model for designing online research-informed short PD courses.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Each Activity begins by valuing participants' existing knowledge and experience before introducing research findings
Constraints¶
- The sequence was adapted from Wilkerson et al. (2018) to suit the aim of connecting research to mentoring practice
Target Learners¶
- prospective and practicing school-based mentors of mathematics teachers
Learning Goals¶
- engaging with mathematics education research
- articulating pedagogical reasoning to novice teachers
Claims¶
- Vas Steps Encouraged Research Engagement And Reflection [+M]
- Vas Course Participants Reconsidered Practice [+M]
