Description

The article describes a hierarchy of vocabulary exercise types developed by Wesche and Paribakht (1994), comprising "five categories of mental processing which are required to complete various vocabulary exercises": selective attention, recognition, manipulation, interpretation and production. The categories are "hierarchical and are classified according to the learning activities required", moving learners from noticing a target word list, to matching words with definitions, constructing words with stems and affixes, guessing meaning in context, and finally producing the word in answers. The study used exercises built on this hierarchy as its experimental treatment.
