Description¶
The intervention combines WPI's ASSISTments online math platform with a virtual professional learning community (vPLC) designed to enhance scalability, reducing travel and scheduling barriers especially for rural districts. Teachers participated in eight vPLC sessions focused on using ASSISTments reports to differentiate instruction, establish routines, and discuss student data. During implementation, teachers followed a four-step formative process: create standards-aligned math assignments, assist students through immediate feedback, assess class performance, and analyze answers together to address common errors and adjust instruction.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher participation in the eight vPLC sessions and implementation of the four-step formative process (Heritage & Popham, 2013) as part of using ASSISTments.
Constraints¶
- The intervention targets grades 6 through 8 math; prior studies showed ASSISTments improves learning when paired with in-person coaching, and the vPLC was added to reduce travel and scheduling barriers.
Target Learners¶
- middle school students in grades 6-8
- middle school math teachers, including those in rural districts
Learning Goals¶
- middle school mathematics achievement
- teachers' use of ASSISTments reports to differentiate instruction and adjust teaching
Claims¶
- vPLC-augmented ASSISTments did not significantly improve overall middle school math achievement relative to a virtual comparison group [-W]
- Across the full sample, students receiving the ASSISTments intervention performed comparably to their virtual comparison peers on end-of-year MAP Growth [-W]
- Low-performing students (below the 50th pretest percentile) showed significant improvement with vPLC-augmented ASSISTments [+W]
- Students with lower baseline performance (below the 50th percentile) showed significantly greater math achievement gains with ASSISTments than matched virtual peers [+W]
Related Designs¶
- Four-step formative assessment cycle: create assignments, assist students through immediate feedback, assess class performance, analyze answers together
- Virtual professional learning community (vPLC) for ASSISTments teacher training
