Description¶
The authors developed both training programs for this study: a VR game on Meta Quest Pro headsets, implemented in Unity 3D, in which children assembled 3D segmented ancient farming tools with hand controllers, after which the word appeared on a blackboard with a spoken recording played three times; and a matched PC condition in PsychoPy showing 15-second assembly videos without hands. The VR environment "was deliberately designed to minimize visual distractions". Each 18-word VR set took on average 19.40 minutes; each PC session took 8 minutes.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Head-mounted displays with hand controllers and inside-out movement tracking, and laptop delivery of the PC and recall tests
Constraints¶
- In this implementation the VR environment "is still richer than the very plain PC user interface", which the authors suggest may have added strain on attentional load
- Words were exposed only once per learning phase and training lasted one week per condition
Target Learners¶
- middle-school children ages 9-13
Learning Goals¶
- recognition and recall of 108 novel spoken and written word forms paired with unfamiliar objects
