Description

A 5-year educational individual development account program run with U.S. Bank for 8th graders in three California Title I middle schools. Eligible students "save $10 a month that is matched by our program with $20 a month for 5 years," with accumulated savings transferred directly toward college tuition at an accredited college. An integral component was a 1-week financial fitness camp teaching the five Financial Fitness for Life themes plus a stock market simulation game, attended by 83 students, 59 of whom had IDAs.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Income eligibility per U.S. Department of Health and Human Services criteria; students must attend at least one financial literacy camp over the 5-year period

Constraints

Target Learners

  • low-income 8th-grade students in Title I middle schools

Learning Goals

  • financial knowledge, saving for postsecondary education
