Description¶
ALEKS PPL is McGraw Hill's adaptive mathematics placement and preparation assessment for placing post-secondary students into appropriate college mathematics courses.
Components¶
- ALEKS PPL adaptive placement assessment: ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) is an adaptive assessment system based on Knowledge Space Theory that recommends placement in post-secondary mathematics courses. It contains 314 items covering elementary mathematics to precalculus, with a limit of 29 questions. The assessment employs an adaptive querying process where "the student's previous answers affect the choice of the next item to ask." Approximately 97% of assessments reach the maximum limit of 29 questions. Placement recommendations fall into six categories based on item and percentage scores. (Matayoshi et al. (2021))
Claims¶
- An RNN-based stopping algorithm reduces ALEKS PPL assessment length by over 26% while maintaining high accuracy [+W]
- Stopping algorithm performance is weaker for middle placement categories (labels 4 and 5) [~W]
- Misclassified assessments cluster near placement cut scores [~W]
