Description

A child-completed picture-book familiarity assessment developed by Davidse et al. that uses book covers and coded story knowledge to measure young children's exposure to books.

Components

  • Book-cover recognition test as a proximal measure of children's book exposure: A child-completed test in which children are shown covers of 41 familiar Dutch picture storybooks and asked who the characters are, what the story is called, and what it is about; coders judge whether the child is acquainted with the book, excluding mere knowledge of merchandised characters. The article presents it as "a new instrument—the book-cover recognition test—as a proximal measure of children's book exposure in research and individual assessments of children's literacy environment". In this study it mediated the HLE–literacy relationship and outperformed questionnaire-based HLE measures. (Davidse et al. (2010))
