Description¶
A 24-session early-childhood coding curriculum built around ScratchJr, with teacher professional development and activities for learning sequencing, loops, conditions, parallel coding, and debugging.
Components¶
- ScratchJr-based CAL curriculum with a four-hour teacher professional development session: The CAL-ScratchJr curriculum is a free, screen-based early-childhood coding curriculum of 24 sessions of 45 minutes each, built on the ScratchJr block platform, which "enables the creation of interactive animated stories using basic and more sophisticated programming commands" without depending on formal literacy. In this study the original English materials were translated into Hebrew, and teachers received a 4-hour professional development session including hands-on ScratchJr activities covering sequencing, loops, conditioning, parallel coding, and debugging, culminating in a personal programmed story. (Avia Ben-Ari et al. (2025))
Claims¶
- Children's coding knowledge improved significantly over the seven-month CAL curriculum implementation, with average CSA scores rising from 2.64 to 7.38 [+M]
- Preschool teachers with no coding background shifted from initial CS-related resistance to voluntary ownership of coding instruction after brief PD and curriculum implementation [+W]
