Description¶
Cignition is an online mathematics tutoring programme that combines one-to-one teacher tutoring with the FogStone Isle fractions game, operated by Cignition Learning.
Components¶
- Cignition online tutoring program with the FogStone Isle fractions game: An online 1:1 mathematics tutoring program in which experienced teacher-tutors met students twice weekly for roughly 25-minute sessions in an online environment where they could "talk and also each draw on a mutually-visible surface". Students also played the fractions game FogStone Isle, and game play and tutoring were "interwoven to target areas of fraction understanding in most need". The evaluation covered equivalence, comparing, and adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. (Roschelle et al. (2020))
- Cignition virtual group math tutoring program: Cignition is a virtual math tutoring program delivering "live virtual one-on-one and group math tutoring using video conferencing and interactive tools." It uses "experienced educators as tutors" and provides "formative data for teachers and parents via an online platform." The evaluated configuration served groups of up to four 5th-grade students and was tested against a control condition in a randomized controlled trial measuring fractions knowledge, confidence, enjoyment, and student–tutor relationships. (Catherine Pratt et al. (2023))
