Description¶
A Chicago Public Schools survey and composite reform index developed to measure elementary teachers' views of school governance, work conditions, school quality, instruction, and school reform in 1991.
Components¶
- CPS Elementary Teacher Survey and General Reform Index (1991): An 8-page survey of Chicago Public Schools elementary teachers administered in late May and June of 1991, completed by 12,708 teachers with a 70 percent overall response rate, covering governance, work conditions, school quality, and instruction. The report combines reform attitude and change items into a "General Reform Index that combines the teachers' responses to the questions on attitudes towards school reform" and ten school-quality clusters with acceptable Cronbach alpha internal consistency. School profiles were returned to 401 schools with response rates of 50 percent or greater. (Easton et al. (1991))
Claims¶
- Chicago elementary teachers are moderately positive about school reform, with about 60 percent agreeing their school is getting better since reform began [+W]
- School size is the characteristic most related to teachers' reform and school-quality ratings, with small schools (350 students or fewer) rated most positively [+W]
- Teachers report very high self-perceived competence and efficacy that are virtually unrelated to their schools' prior achievement levels [+W]
- Between 1991 and 1994, elementary teachers' test-preparation time increased and responses converged toward moderate agreement on reform items [+W]
- Chicago elementary teachers spent an estimated 155,464 hours preparing students for standardized tests in 1990-1991 [+W]
