Description¶
EATS is a BigBlueButton-based software platform developed by Emirhan Gülen for instructors to monitor students’ facial-expression-derived emotions and attention during live online classes.
Components¶
- EATS: an Emotion and Attention Tracking System for live online classes: EATS is a platform built on the BigBlueButton live classroom system that measures students' emotion and attention in real time via image processing technology for students with cameras activated. As the article describes it, "the platform developed on the BigBlueButton live classroom system displays emojis corresponding to users’ facial expressions, allowing the instructor to monitor students’ emotions in real time." Background colors of name boxes change according to attention percentages, and access to the data is restricted solely to the instructor. The system was developed following the Software Development Life Cycle and integrates established libraries including OpenCV. (Emirhan Gülen (2026))
Claims¶
- EATS showed high agreement with expert observation for happiness, surprise, sadness, and fear (92.5–97.5%) and for attention (97.5%) [+M]
- EATS detected disgust with lower agreement (90%) than other basic emotions, highlighting a limitation of facial-expression-only measurement [~M]
