Description¶
A modular question-generation system developed by J. Leo et al. that uses the EMMeT-OWL medical ontology and expert-authored templates to generate case-based MCQs for medical residents and physician specialty trainees.
Components¶
- EMCQG: a modular ontology-based system for generating case-based medical MCQs: EMCQG (EMMeT Multiple Choice Question Generator) is a modular system built on EMMeT-OWL that fills question-template skeletons with content from the ontology. It comprises a templating system plus modules for stems, options, exclusions, explanations, difficulty, and question text: "the remaining main modules act as engines to fill in and structure the template skeletons with content from EMMeT-OWL". Templates encode rules over ranked clinical relations (e.g., distractor ranks must not exceed the key's), and OWL reasoning validates candidate terms against patient demographics. (J. Leo et al. (2019))
Claims¶
- Ontology-based generation produced exam-appropriate case-based MCQs, with 30% of a stratified sample rated appropriate by both expert raters and 50% by at least one [+W]
- EMCQG generated more than 3 million distinct case-based questions for four physician specialities from the EMMeT ontology [+W]
