Description¶
Lab4CE is a rich learning interface and middleware platform for collaborative remote practical sessions, developed to support shared experimentation by connecting learners and tutors with virtual resources.
Components¶
- Artifact-awareness tool for shared practical sessions: A component of Lab4CE's rich learning interface operationalizing artifact awareness, defined in the article as "one person's up-to-the-moment knowledge of the artifacts and tools that other distributed people are using as they perform their individual, ongoing work". It shows users involved in an experiment with role and connection status icons, supports inviting peers or tutors into a practical session, displays partners' Terminals as live-feed thumbnails, and highlights with a light red line when another user performs an action on a shared resource. The middleware proxies and broadcasts interactions in real time to the session's owner and guests. (Julien Broisin et al. (2017))
Claims¶
- Using Lab4CE is associated with higher engagement in remote Linux practice than installing a local virtual machine (more than 50% vs 25% of students) [+W]
- Students' activity within Lab4CE correlates positively with their learning achievement (r = 0.41, p = .002) [+W]
- Collaborative features of Lab4CE saw very little use in the exploratory study [-W]
