Description

MAILS is Tomáš Lintner's 34-item modular scale for assessing general-population AI literacy, AI creation, AI self-efficacy, and AI self-competency in German or English.

Components

  • MAILS: a modular meta AI literacy scale in which creating AI emerged as a separate factor from AI literacy: MAILS is a 34-item general-population scale built on Ng et al.'s four AI literacy areas plus psychological competencies (self-efficacy, self-perceived competency). Its CFA found that "creating AI was found to be a separate factor", so the authors made the scale modular: AI literacy (18 items), create AI (4 items), AI self-efficacy (6 items), and AI self-competency (6 items) can each be measured independently. The review found high evidence for structural validity, internal consistency, and construct validity, and reports it is the only scale with evidence for minimal floor and ceiling effects.
