Description¶
A supplemental preschool mathematics curriculum developed by Alice Klein and Prentice Starkey with Alma Ramirez and distributed by Pearson Scott Foresman.
Components¶
- Pre-K Mathematics supplemental preschool curriculum: Pre-K Mathematics is "a supplemental curriculum designed to develop the informal mathematical knowledge and skills of preschool children with content organized into seven units": counting and numbers, arithmetic operations (fall and spring), spatial sense and geometry, patterns, measurement and data, and logical reasoning. Concepts are taught through teacher-guided small-group activities with concrete manipulatives, with parallel take-home activities designed to help parents support their children's mathematical development at home. It was developed by Alice Klein and Prentice Starkey with Alma Ramirez and distributed by Pearson Scott Foresman. (U.S. Department of Education et al. (2013))
- Teacher-guided small-group manipulatives lessons paired with parallel take-home parent activities: The Pre-K Mathematics program organizes instruction as weekly math activities presented twice in teacher-guided small-group lessons of four to six children lasting approximately 20 minutes, using concrete manipulatives, with "related math activities... sent home every 1 to 2 weeks" and parents encouraged to engage their children with these activities. Home activity materials parallel the classroom activities and are available with picture strips in English or Spanish. This classroom-plus-home structure was implemented across both reviewed studies over the school year. (U.S. Department of Education et al. (2013))
