Description¶
SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) is a structured-literacy curriculum developed and distributed by Collaborative Classroom for foundational reading instruction and intervention in grades K–12.
Components¶
- SIPPS foundational skills reading curriculum: SIPPS is a foundational skills reading curriculum for new and struggling readers in grades K–12 that provides "a structured-literacy approach to instruction through explicit routines focused on phonological awareness, spelling-sounds, and sight words." It can serve as a core/Tier I program supporting grade-level foundational skills standards, or as a Tier 2/Tier 3 intervention to accelerate progress and close gaps. It is designed for small-group format and can be implemented by classroom teachers, interventionists, or paraprofessionals. (SIPPS program description et al. (2022))
- Two-strand model of beginning literacy: language comprehension and word recognition: SIPPS is built on "the premise that beginning literacy is best taught through two distinct strands: one focusing on language comprehension and the other on word recognition." The program's systematic scope and sequence operationalizes the word-recognition strand through explicit routines for phonological awareness, spelling-sounds, and sight words, while the comprehension strand addresses meaning-making. This division structures how the program's levels and lessons are organized. (SIPPS program description et al. (2022))
- Three-level developmental progression of word-recognition instruction with an older-student variant: The curriculum organizes word-recognition instruction into "three developmental levels of progression in word recognition: simple alphabetic (SIPPS Beginning Level), spelling-pattern (SIPPS Extension Level), and polysyllabic/morphemic (SIPPS Challenge Level)." A separate variant, SIPPS Plus, covers the simple alphabetic and spelling-pattern phases but is designed specifically for older students in grades 4–12, allowing the same progression to serve adolescent struggling readers. (SIPPS program description et al. (2022))
