Description

Success for All is a comprehensive K–5 school reform and reading programme developed and operated by the Success for All Foundation for schools serving students at risk of reading difficulty.

Components

  • Success for All comprehensive school reform program: Success for All is "a comprehensive school reform program designed to ensure success in reading for children in high-poverty schools." It provides a K-5 reading curriculum covering phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, beginning with phonetically-controlled mini-books in grades K-1. Cooperative learning is used extensively at all grade levels; struggling first graders receive one-to-one or small-group tutoring; children are frequently assessed on curriculum-based measures and regrouped across grade lines by current reading level; and a Solutions Team works with parents on attendance, behavior, and social-emotional support. (Success for All program evidence summary (2015))
  • Success for All® (SFA®) whole-school reform model: Success for All is "a whole-school reform model (that is, a model that integrates curriculum, school culture, family, and community supports) for students in prekindergarten through grade 8." It combines a literacy program with quarterly assessments of student learning, a social-emotional development program, computer-assisted tutoring tools, family support teams for parents, a facilitator who works with school personnel, and extensive training for intervention teachers. Developed by Robert Slavin and Nancy Madden with Johns Hopkins University, it is distributed by the Success for All Foundation; as of October 2016 the average cost was $104 per child per year. (Success for All® (2017))
  • SFA® ability-grouped 90-minute daily reading block with sequenced phonics-to-comprehension instruction: SFA® elementary reading programs "combine cooperative-learning strategies with detailed lessons, which incorporate multimedia, puppet skits, and videos to support students' engagement and classroom instruction." Students in prekindergarten through first grade participate in Reading Roots, and students in second grade and above participate in Reading Wings. Students are grouped into reading classes of 15–20 students with others of similar reading ability, regardless of age or grade level, during a daily 90-minute reading period; regrouping by demonstrated improvement lets teachers teach the whole class without smaller within-class groups. Instruction is sequenced across several years, emphasi (Success for All® (2017))
