Description¶
An automated computer-based assessment tool developed by Lehmann et al. that converts learners’ natural-language mental-model descriptions into concept-relation graphs and compares them with an expert reference model.
Components¶
- T-MITOCAR as an automated model-based assessment tool for knowledge integration: T-MITOCAR (Text-Model Inspection Trace of Concepts and Relations) is an automated computer-based diagnostic tool that uses natural language expressions as input data to generate graph-based representations of learners' mental models. It measures structural and semantic similarities of verbally externalized mental models compared to a reference (expert) model using measures such as GAMMA (structural density) and BSM (balanced semantic matching). The tool relies on "the dependence of syntax and semantics within natural language" and works with a comparably small amount of text (350 words+). (Lehmann et al. (2019))
Claims¶
- Integration prompts improve structural integration of knowledge across professional domains in pre-service teachers' mental models [+M]
- Prompts have a significant multivariate main effect on combined structural and semantic integration measures [+M]
