Description

TEACCH Structured Teaching is an evidence-informed framework developed and disseminated by the University of North Carolina TEACCH Autism Program to organize environments, tasks, time, and visual information for supporting autistic individuals' independence and learning.

Components

  • TEACCH Structured Teaching and the individual work system as a visually organized framework for independent practice: The TEACCH approach (Structured Teaching) organizes time, space and sequences of events to support autistic individuals in understanding and executing learning activities; it is a framework, not a curriculum. Its individual work system (IWS) is "a visually organized space where children practice acquired skills", a low-tech instructional technology using furniture, printed images and Velcro or magnets. A work system visually communicates four pieces of information: the tasks to do, how much work there is, how the student knows they are finished, and what to do when finished. The article implements this framework in immersive VR to promote independent learning. (Herrera et al. (2024))
