Description

Writing to Read is a computer-supported beginning-literacy programme developed by IBM that progresses from sound-and-letter production to writing words, sentences, and stories, with supplementary practice activities and progress reporting.

Components

  • Writing-to-read lesson sequence with speed-practice and simulated e-mail activities: The program's instructional pattern moves from sound-level to text-level production: lessons "begin by having students say and write individual sounds and the letters that represent those sounds, and then progress to having students write words, sentences, and stories." Two supplementary activities extend the pattern: the Power Fountain activity for practicing "speed and accuracy in writing and typing" after attaining a certain level, and the E-mail Tower, "a simulated e-mail program," for practicing newly acquired skills by writing short messages. Teachers or parents can print individual or group progress reports. (What Works Clearinghouse (2007))
