Description

The study adapts Shen et al.'s (2015) interdisciplinary reasoning and communication (IRC) framework for novice high-school students rather than experts. The original framework's skills of "integration, translation, transfer, and transformation" were modified: the codes of integration and transformation were eliminated for lack of occurrence, translation was renamed explanation, and codes were added to distinguish correct from vague or incorrect answers and to pinpoint missing interdisciplinary reasoning. The adapted coding book distinguishes correct explanation, vague or incorrect explanation, no explanation, transfer, and no transfer.
