Description¶
Cognitive episodes organize LLM reasoning traces into temporally ordered functional problem-solving states. The framework builds on Schoenfeld's Episode Theory, which "models the problem-solving process as a temporally ordered sequence of functional episodes", comprising Read, Analyze, Plan, Implement, Explore, Verify, and Monitor, plus an added Answer episode capturing final answer commitment. In this article the taxonomy supplies a cognitively grounded vocabulary for characterizing how problem-solving burden is distributed across stages of long reasoning traces, enabling interpretable difficulty prediction.

Claims¶
- Harder SAT Math items are associated with more implementation-centered and iterative episode dynamics — stronger Implement counts and Analyze–Implement transitions — rather than a proportional increase in all reasoning activity [+M]
- Episode-composition and transition features contribute predictive process evidence beyond semantics, with Epi.+Tran. reaching 0.136 permutation importance versus 0.084 for Sem. in the Both (Role) setting [+M]
