Description¶
Coherence analysis (CA) is the paper's approach to analyzing learners' problem-solving processes in OELEs by "combining information gleaned from sequences of student actions to produce measures of action coherence." CA assumes that when students encounter information that could improve their solution, they should act on it; edits not justified by recent views are labeled unsupported edits. Six measures are derived from activity traces: edits/annotations per minute, unsupported edit percentage, information viewing percentage, potential generation percentage, used potential percentage, and disengaged percentage.
Accounts¶
- Coherence analysis framework and its six activity-trace measures: Coherence analysis (CA) is the paper's approach to analyzing learners' problem-solving processes in OELEs by "combining information gleaned from sequences of student actions to produce measures of action coherence." (Gautam Biswas et al. (2016))
Claims¶
- Cluster analysis of coherence metrics on 98 students revealed five distinct behavior profiles, with engaged and efficient students showing the highest reading scores and significantly higher science gains than all other clusters. [+M]
- Confused guessers had significantly lower pre- and post-test skill scores than most other clusters, but their science learning gains were not significantly different from those of Clusters 1, 2, and 4. [+M]
