Description

The review adopts DeCuir-Gunby and Schutz's (2014) classification as a common language for analyzing each article's approach to race. The five purposes are "descriptive or demographic (i.e., to describe the sample or another level of demographics; explanatory (i.e., to use race or ethnicity to explain variance); comparative (i.e., to compare racial and/or ethnic groups to each other); race-focused (i.e., to center race in the analysis and build upon race-based or cultural theories); and race-reimaged (i.e., to build upon race-based or cultural theories or lenses as a means to add nuance to traditional constructs) purposes." The authors turned these categories into a decision tree (Fig. 1) to classify each study's treatment of participants' race/ethnic identity and to center studies going beyond treating race as a "diverse sample."
