Description

The ESDM is the authors' alternative to the reciprocal effects model of academic self-concept and achievement. It "posits a unidirectional effect of trait-like academic achievement on trait-like self-concept", and holds that time-specific scores on both constructs arise from those trait-like levels "in addition to common time-specific state factors, e.g., illness or mood", with autoregressive effects among the state factors and no direct prospective effects between occasion-specific scores. In this article it is fitted to simulated PALMA-like and TRAIN-like data, where its good fit suggests observed cross-lagged effects may be spurious.
