Description¶
The article proposes that online collaboration comprises four types of activities: task-related activities in the content space (exchanging information, asking questions), social activities in the relational space (greetings, social support, grounding via shared understanding), regulation of task-related activities (planning, monitoring, evaluating task progress), and regulation of social activities (planning, monitoring, evaluating the collaboration). The authors argue that "to gain a complete picture of the nature of online collaboration, attention should be paid to all four activities," noting researchers usually address only one or two. The framework was operationalized in a 19-category coding scheme and validated by factor analysis.
