Description

The article distinguishes four qualitatively different, socially observable emotion regulation strategies used by groups during collaborative tasks. Task structuring is "a cognitively oriented strategy" used to restore on-task behaviour when members are unfocused; encouragement involves praising or supporting a member lacking confidence; social reinforcement aims to "reinforce a stable, safe or positive socio-emotional atmosphere"; and increasing awareness involves verbalizing and addressing each other's affective states so the group can jointly explain and reduce negative feelings. The categories were developed from prior emotion regulation research and reached a Cohen's kappa of 0.79.
