Description

GIFT's evaluation function serves as a testbed, derived from Hanks et al. (1993), supporting manipulation of the learner model, instructional strategies, and domain-specific knowledge within GIFT. It enables researchers to experimentally assess ITS components, tools, and methods and their effect on engagement, knowledge or skill acquisition, retention, reasoning, and transfer of skills. The methodology supports observation and classification of agent behaviors in an exploratory phase using educational data mining, stricter hypothesis-testing comparisons in a confirmatory phase, and replication of conditions and measurement to generalize results.
