Description¶
A coding system the authors developed to measure explicit instruction and scaffolding of purpose setting at fine grain. It draws on Vygotsky's ZPD and the GRR model "while also incorporating research on scaffolding", operationalizing the GRR through Wood's (2003) contingent teaching (domain and instructional contingencies) and Meichenbaum and Biemiller's (1998) self-direction dimension moving students from other-directed to self-directed. Coding covers actor, content, quality of scaffold, and communication mode within instructional cycles, and uniquely includes student application, which Wood's theory does not address.
Accounts¶
- Instructional Quality and Implementation Coding system combining Wood's contingent teaching with Meichenbaum and Biemiller's self-direction dimension: A coding system the authors developed to measure explicit instruction and scaffolding of purpose setting at fine grain. Claims¶
- High-gain teacher's high-change students received full explicit domain instruction on how and why readers set purposes, unlike the typical teacher's students [+M]
- Feedback on domain information (partial and full feedback on how and why readers set purposes) was provided only to the high-gain teacher's high-change students [+M]
