Description¶
The article inductively derived a coding taxonomy: "This resulted in the following six DF: reviewing directions and strategies, sharing and confirming information, brainstorming, empirical evaluation, clarification and elaboration, and submission and reflection." These map onto inquiry-based learning phases — orientation (reviewing directions, sharing information), conceptualization (brainstorming), investigation (empirical evaluation), discussion (clarification and elaboration) and conclusion (submission and reflection) — as a means of segmenting CSCL dialogue by its function for knowledge construction.
Accounts¶
- Six discourse functions mapped onto inquiry-based knowledge construction categories: The article inductively derived a coding taxonomy: "This resulted in the following six DF: reviewing directions and strategies, sharing and confirming information, brainstorming, empirical evaluation, clarification and elaboration, and submission and reflection." These map onto inquiry-based learning phases — orientation (reviewing directions, sharing information), conceptualization (brainstorming), investigation (empirical evaluation), discussion (clarification and elaboration) and conclusion (submission and reflection) — as a means of segmenting CSCL dialogue by its function for knowledge construction. (Aaron J. Peltoniemi et al. (2025))
Claims¶
- Group A, who failed the learning task, devoted most dialogues to orientation and conceptualization and asked yes-no questions at the personal level, while group B, who succeeded, distributed dialogue across investigation and discussion [+M]
- The emergent LLM coding pipeline reaches substantial agreement with expert human coding (Cohen's κ = 0.78, raw agreement 84%) on a stratified 10% sample [+W]
Related Research Methods¶
- A bottom-up taxonomy of seven student LLM usage categories organized into three support types
- Six-dimension taxonomy of faculty-student relationships extracted from over a dozen measures
