Three-tiered classification system of self-regulation: categories, domains, and facets¶

Description¶
The review establishes a hierarchical taxonomy for organizing the variety of self-regulation terms found in early-childhood measures. As the authors state, "a three-tiered classification system was established, starting with the most detailed processes (facets), which form the domains that, in turn, contribute to the broader categories." Facets are specific processes or skills (e.g., adaptability, attention shifting), which group into domains such as cognitive flexibility, which belong to the broader categories of cognitive, emotion, or behavior regulation. The system was built by open-coding terms from measure manuals and mapping facets to established constructs.
