Description

Beyond cognitive strategy, the review codes scaffolding behaviours by method of expression (verbal/auditory vs. nonverbal/visual, which can co-occur, e.g. an expert narrating actions) and by an inductively derived activity category. The active/passive category, derived from Tambaum's concept of indirect scaffolding, captures purposeful absence: "the turns in which the tutor is available for the learner but only observes the learner acting independently and does not interfere even when the learner faces a problem". Passive excerpts were not further coded into expression or strategy categories because they describe the absence of behaviour.

Accounts

  • A two-axis expression-and-activity taxonomy: scaffolding behaviours vary in verbal/nonverbal expression and active/passive engagement: Beyond cognitive strategy, the review codes scaffolding behaviours by method of expression (verbal/auditory vs. nonverbal/visual, which can co-occur, e.g. an expert narrating actions) and by an inductively derived activity category.
