Description¶
The article formulates a prescriptive model in which knowledge is subdivided into units where "a few information items in any unit are elaborated by further description through "subordinate" knowledge units", with pointers linking units vertically and laterally. Superordinate units hold information most important for the intended task domain, and each unit is elaborated into few (<5) subordinate units to fit human processing and short-term-memory limits. Used with a top-down retrieval procedure, the model is expected to facilitate recall, debugging, and modification tasks.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Knowledge must be adapted to the intended task domain, with the most frequently used or most retrieval-useful information placed at higher levels
Constraints¶
- Each knowledge unit is only elaborated into a few (<5) subordinate units, and unit size is kept small enough to be easily processed but large enough to keep the total number of units small
Target Learners¶
- college and senior high school physics students
Target Learning Objectives¶
- recall of complex scientific knowledge
- use of knowledge for complex problem-solving tasks such as debugging and modification
Claims¶
- Hierarchical Organization Improves Complex Task Performance [+M]
- Organization Task Match Determines Benefit [+M]
- Higher Hierarchy Levels Recalled Better [+M]
