Description¶
Dual Empowerment is a developmental instructional design framework in which "Dual Empowerment (DE) refers to the deliberate instructional integration of VR-based simulation and authentic physical practice to support both learning outcomes (LO) and skill transfer/retention (STR)". VR empowerment supplies data-driven feedback, scenario simulation, and safe trial-and-error for precision-oriented learning; physical empowerment reintroduces authenticity, sensory calibration, and practical application under ecological constraints. DE treats the two modalities as interdependent empowerment pathways whose structured, staged coordination—not immersion alone—supports durable competence, extending experience-centered immersive learning models such as CAMIL toward a design model for blended vocational training.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Both modalities must be structurally coupled rather than loosely connected; the design assumes neither modality alone is sufficient and competence is stabilized only when simulation-informed strategies withstand authentic constraints
Constraints¶
- The framework targets skill-intensive vocational domains; the article notes existing frameworks like TPACK, CoI, and Activity Theory do not fully specify how immersive and physical modalities should be coupled over time, which DE addresses
Target Learners¶
- vocational education and training (VET) learners in skill-intensive technical domains
Learning Goals¶
- procedural skill acquisition, durable skill transfer and retention in welding and comparable technical trades
Claims¶
- Instructional Quality Dimensions Predict Dual Empowerment [+M]
- Dual Empowerment Predicts Psychological Mediators [+M]
- Lo Str Bidirectional Asymmetrical Coupling [+M]
